Noah’s ark is adrift on open seas, with best friends Finny and Leah on board. Weeks at sea with no land in sight, food stocks are running low. The fragile peace between carnivores and herbivores could break any second.

After a series of unfortunate events, the kids find themselves washed overboard – along with the last of the food supplies! Leah and new-friend Jelly are marooned on a remote island. While Finny wakes in a strange colony filled with oddly familiar creatures living in harmony – under the rumbling of a belching volcano.

In a race against time, tide and terrifying tremors, Finny must rescue his friends, reunite with his family and save a whole colony from total destruction.

Main Characters

Finny is a sweet 10-year-old Nestrian boy. He is happy-go-lucky and loves nothing more than pleasing others. Although easily spooked, Finny can muster incredible bravery in times of need. He has a strong sense of justice and doing the right thing is very important to him. Finny’s biggest flaw is that he can be talked into dangerous escapades by the more-foolhardy Leah. He finds it very difficult to say no! Finny is almost always upbeat, positive and ready to face any challenge with a smile and a hug!

12-year-old Leah was brought up by her mother to believe that the only person she can completely rely on is herself. She is slowly realising the value of friends and family and needs to learn that it’s okay to ask for help.  While she’s not comfortable with big shows of emotion, Leah has an undeniable soft spot for her new brother and sister, Finny and Jelly.  A thrill-seeker, Leah lives by the mantra: better to ask for forgiveness than for permission!

Like father, like son, Dave has an almost unwavering cheerful disposition. He has a vital role on board the Ark: he, along with a reluctant Hazel, is the ship’s cook, in charge of feeding 50,000 hungry animals. Like all Nestrians, he is a skilled craftsman, there is nothing that Dave cannot build. His upbeat happy mood can be a teeny bit irritating to those around him (Hazel) – how can anybody be so positive? Comically accident prone, calamity follows Dave around like a bad smell. While Dave is clumsy and inept, he has been known to have the odd heroic moment or two.

Intelligent, cynical, hot-headed and stubborn, Hazel is tenacious, scrappy and used to fighting her corner. Being a Grymp, Hazel is raising her daughter to prepare for a tough life in the wilderness. She believes in hard work and is trying to instil this quality in Leah. Unfortunately for Hazel, Leah likes nothing more than goofing off, which is an endless source of conflict between mother and daughter. Grymps traditionally prefer solitude so this new blended family is something Hazel is still getting used to.

Jelly is a 4-year-old little jellyfish who is as cute as a button. Between brain and mouth there is no filter and, like a lot of children her age, Jelly will say whatever is on her mind – good or bad! Jelly is quite innocent and sometimes can inadvertently cause havoc for Leah and Finny.

Patch is the much-loved leader of the Nestrians. In human years, she would be in her 70s.  Patch wears a living, talking necklace named Clam who is quite cheeky and also acts as a confidante. Patch’s role in the colony is de facto grandmother. Wise and kind, Patch is the glue that keeps spirits up among the Nestrians.

Chief Clyde is a soldier through and through. An order is an order and duty is paramount. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for his leader Patch and his fellow Nestrians in the colony. He seems hard as a rock and as tough as nails but he also does seem to have a little chip on his shoulder, feeling not fully respected by his peers and even a little self-conscious.
